A meaningful life begins with you

The beautiful thing about your life is that you actually get to design it in the way that you like. If you are looking towards living a meaningful life, you can design your life to accommodate your purpose. You don’t have to look outwards, just inwards. It is important to realize that your quest to meaning is a choice. A choice you’ll have to make every day to create your desired reality. A meaningful life begins with a choice, with you.

A life well lived is a life with meaning

I would describe meaning as simply a soul feeding purpose. A purpose that gets you to wake up every morning with a smile on your face. Every day is seen as an opportunity to feed that purpose and to live a reality that you could have only ever dreamed of.

Living your purpose is to essentially live your truth, your calling. But before we get to realizing your purpose, you will need to know what that purpose is.

The path to discovering your purpose is essentially an internal journey that each one of us has to go through. It’s a creative and spiritual process that will lead you to enlightenment.

Your Path to Wisdom

You discover your purpose when you devote some time to sit with yourself and simply reflect on your life. To move one step closer to living a meaningful life, begin by contemplating the following questions:

  • Who have I been up to this moment?
  • Am I content with the way that I am living my life? How can I become better?
  • What would be the truest, highest expression of myself as a human being?
  • When do I feel inspired? invigorated? enlightened?

Carefully consider these questions before answering them. Do not be intimidated if you find it difficult to answer them. The purpose of this exercise is to stimulate your mind into a state of deep thinking and awareness to unlock what lies beyond the surface. Do the best that you can and you will surely be led to the answers that will stir your awakening.

Once you have an idea of what your purpose is, your next step is to be intentional towards living your meaningful life. Now is the time to create the reality you want for yourself.

Living your Purpose

Your reality is the product of your thoughts, your mindset, your actions, and intentions.

Your thoughts create your life. Because your life -good or bad, desirable or undesirable- is a reflection of your mindset. Your unconscious or default mindset is a culmination of all your thoughts and feelings.

The Power of Mindset

If your thoughts are negative in nature, your life is likely to be a place of despair. Take that in. It’s not that your thoughts will be negative if your life is in despair but the opposite. You can live a difficult life but still harbor a positive outlook and it will slowly but surely reflect on your life.

This is because our thoughts create our life. Our subconscious mind, like a tape-recorder, will listen to your thoughts and do everything in its power to turn these thoughts into a reality. Anything is possible because our subconscious mind has no limits. The secret is that the subconscious mind does not discriminate between negative and positive thoughts, it will treat them just the same. As in, if you think positive and stimulating thoughts, your subconscious will do everything in its power to stir such positive thoughts into motion and vice versa. It is therefore up to you to decide what to feed your mind.

Your chance of living a meaningful life is highly dependent on your thoughts and mindset. Having a positive mindset is key in the manifestation of purpose and meaning in your life.

It is is important to embark on your journey with a positive intention. It is counterintuitive to begin your approach towards a meaningful life from a negative standpoint. Your desire to change shouldn’t look something like: “I hate my life. Everything sucks. Nothing is working for me!” but rather “I am aware that my life has not served me to my fullest potential but I believe that I have the power to improve my reality.”

Remember, positive intentions fuel positive results. Always think about what you can do instead of focusing on the barriers that stand in your way. Use your positive mindset to direct your attention away from any obstacles

Consciousness

In order to ensure that you are in a positive state of mind, be sure not to fall in a state of unconsciousness. Acknowledge the moment you are in right now. Realize the power you have over this thought or feeling you are having at this moment. Study your thoughts – are they positive or self-destructive? Once you catch yourself running a negative tape in your head, bring yourself back to this moment because this moment is clarity. It is peace. Peace is pivotal in realizing your purpose. Only when you are in a state of consciousness, i.e. in a clear space of creativity and clarity, can you truly be able to realize your purpose.

Materializing your Positive Mindset

Of course, your mindset would be what you carry with you throughout your quest to meaning. To get the most out of your positive mindset, create action steps and habits that will materialize your positive mindset. It’s not enough to want to live a meaningful life and have a beautiful mindset that supports your vision. You have to work towards it. This will require prioritizing certain things and dismissing others.

Purposeful Habits that will Enrich your Life

There is a myriad of things you can do to cultivate clarity, wisdom, and peace (all of which are essential to realizing your purpose). It is absolutely up to you to decide which habits you are going to incorporate into your life.

Here are a few of my personal favorite habits:

  1. journaling – whether it’s writing down your thoughts, recording what you learned from books you consume, or quick recap of my day.
  2. meditation – this practice will expand the level of your consciousness with each meditation. It is the best teacher of awareness.
  3. gratitude – nobody likes to be around a complainer. Expressing gratitude towards your life and your blessings will help keep your positive mindset in check.
  4. mindfulness – just like meditation, mindfulness is the conscious practice of being aware, here in the moment. There’s no better way for me to express mindfulness than this powerful saying by Lao Tzu: “If you are depressed you are living in the past. If you are anxious you are living in the future. If you are at peace you are living in the present.”
  5. reading – I especially like to read spiritual books by Eckhart Tolle or on Stoic philosophy because they introduce a great sense of clarity and wisdom in my life.
  6. setting positive intentions each day – a great way to recenter your thoughts back to clarity is to create an intention, each day. When you set an intention, you are consciously setting a motion to improve your life. You are basically sending a signal to your brain, body and the universe to get to work.

Your purpose does not have to be one thing. It can be the type of person you want to be. Or a career path that you know is your true calling. Or maybe your purpose is a list of 100 goals you want to accomplish in your life. Whatever it is, you have to be conscious and intentional when working towards your purpose. Record and reflect on your progress.

Your purpose is waiting for you, it has been all along.
